Return to the Sea Trout - Rating 5/5

We used to visit the Sea Trout years ago for weekends &breaks. We have returned as regular visitors in order to visit a relative nearby. Landlords Lauren, Simon &Nigel (assisted by Jasmine)the current hosts have rejuvenated the place, &always give us a warm &hospitable welcome. The room we favour staying in is bright, well decorated with a comfortable bed &has everything we need for our stay. We enjoy dinner with a creative menu, good produce locally sourced. There is a peaceful garden for the summer &cosy log fires for the winter. We are so glad we revisited the Trout &leave feeling destressed after only a short stay.

My wife didn\'t pout when she stayed at the Trout - Rating 4/5

My wife and I found the Sea Trout Inn a very pleasant and convenient place to stay for three nights on a B&B basis while visiting family in Diptford. We were in the annexe, which served our purposes very well. We did get some noise - some loud - seemingly from somewhere in the heating system, and this needs to be attended to. But generally, this is a peaceful locationwith ample parking, not far from the River Dart, and within easy reach of Totnes.Staff were very pleasant and helpful. The meals were good and well presented. Breakfast could have been hotter and on a warmer plate, but my wife thought the porridge was excellent! Those on a budget should take note that Thursday night is fish &chip night at the Trout, when two come for the usual price of one. I would suggest that this offer be made available all week and be extended to cover all meals! I have to add that I thought the price of a dessert was well over the top at almost £7.00.Consideration should be given to extending breakfast times to 10.00 am. The 9.15 finish is far too early for those on vacation.Would we want to come again? Quite likely. My wife would have no hesitation, but that\'s because she spends more freely than me, and is not so insistent upon good value for money as I am. Maybe we can come again in low season, when hopefully, accommodation prices - if not the meals (except on Thursday!) - are more affordable.Would I recommend the Trout? Yes, I suppose I would because it has a lot going for it, although those on a budget may well feel the need to shop around.I trust my review will prove helpful.Yours sincerely, Howard Ashton

The Sea Trout Inn is set in a beautiful location with a delightful garden and well appointed spacious rooms. It is a family run pub and we met every one of them - all very welcoming and easy company. Splendid food with a separate children\'s menu. The main menu is perfect i.e. not too big, offering a good choice of seafood as you might expect. We loved our two nights there and will definitely go back.

This is an absolutely excellent inn. Everything about it is excellent and it is an ideal place to stay if you just want to relax in pleasant surroundings. The food is also excellent, but beware of the cost of any little extras you may fancy. Not cheap, but really good value for money at £200 bed, breakfast and evening meal for the two of us.

Short break in Devon - Rating 4/5

Chose to stay at Sea Trout Inn because of its location near to South Devon Steam Railway. Our booking said check in time was 6pm. Actually its 2 - 10:30pm, would have been useful to know this. Hotel was quiet when we arrived &we were shown straight to our room. This was very comfortable with a large ensuite bathroom. We had both walk in shower and bath. Bar served good selection of Palmers beers, very tasty and wine list is good and quite extensive. We ate in hotel both evenings. Food is good but portions are to our taste just way too big. Breakfast is excellent. The South West version of Black Pudding is very herby compared to our Scottish version. All in all an enjoyable stay in a beautiful part of the world, enhanced by steam whistles! One thing Inn could do is relax the check out time by 30 minutes to an hour.

We were frequent guests at the Sea Trout some years ago &decided to return to see how it is now. We weren\'t disappointed, it\'s in a very peaceful location which gave us chance for some relaxation. The rooms have changed &been refurbished since we were there before, we were given a lovely room &just regretted our time there was so short. The bar &restaurant were well run with friendly &efficient staff, the food good &still using local ingredients where possible. It was hard to leave &drag ourselves back to our busy time pressured lives but we will certainly be back &for longer next time. Thank you.

We have stayed here many times before, but this was our first time with the new owners. Fortunately they haven\'t tried to change what was already an excellent format, so as always we had a really enjoyable stay. This time we had the feature room which has a huge bath that fills really quickly. Great if you\'ve been doing some serious walking on Dartmoor or the coast path. The food is excellent and we reallyb liked the choice on the new menu and the wine list. Dieters beware both the raspberry and white chocolate ice cream and peanut butter with salted caramel. One point deducted because the wifi signal still doesn\'t reach the bedrooms.

I am a little puzzled and confused as we certainly do not close up for breakfast at 9,15 am.I personally serve most breakfast days and we are officially open until 9.30 , but if we get a late guest coming down at 9.30 or even 15 minutes or so later , we have never said no and do most certainly andgladly accomodate them and serve their hot breakfast .The cold buffet stays there until out last guest leaves the tables , this can be up to 10.30 particularly at weekends .I trust this explains our breakfast policy .Kind regards Nigel Newhouse Landlord

We found this place by a random stop off on our way home. We had an amazing roast dinner and the best chocolate brownie I have ever tasted! So for our anniversary we decided to book for the night and we weren\'t disappointed. All the staff are friendly and attentive, the room was spacious and lovely and clean and the meal we had in the restaurant was fantastic, breakfast was equally as nice. We know good quality and we had it here in every way. Will be back soon.

Booked for a wedding nearby, emailed and asked if we could check in early - no problem they said. Arrived at about 11am and as promised, checked in to our room with plenty of time to get changed for wedding. Room was very clean, nicely decorated, ample storage with very spacious en-suite with bath &shower. We were in a twin room but you had loads of room unlike some hotels/B&Bs where you may as well be sleeping in same bed! Slept well, woken by birds singing and normal village life.Breakfast was good, nice separate room all set up with doors onto garden area.Didn\'t have time to try out the bar but it looked as you\'d wish for a country pub. All staff I spoke to were very friendly &helpful. All in all a very pleasant stay and would come back or recommend if in area.

The booking process was easy and efficient. We arrived early to receive a warm welcome and friendly offer to access our room early.Bedroom was comfortable although carpet a bit tired and beds also tending to sag. Bathroom immaculate with great shower. Good night\'s sleep followed by friendly welcome in the morning and excellent full English. Almost a 5* rating!

Would recommend - Rating 5/5

We stayed here for 2 nights and ate there with the family on one of the nights. The food was excellent, they were very relaxed, friendly and accommodating as we had a party member with a young baby and a lively toddler, also we had our golden retriever with us (who is very quiet, clean and well-behaved, otherwise we wouldn\'t take her). Because of the dog we weren\'t allowed in the restaurant area but were in the bar. At least we were allowed in with her - we get fed up of being relegated to scruffy smelly areas quite often - but the Sea Trout was much more respectful - they even provided a dog bowl and dog towel in the bedroom - which was a nice room overlooking the beer garden at the back. Nice bathroom, nice toiletries. Comfy bed, although the pillows were a bit flat and hard for me (I forgot to take my usual feather pillow). Lovely breakfast out in the bar (away from other clients because of the dog)- the only fault I would say was with the coffee - I expected a cafetiere on my table, but it was in a large jug being dished out when they came round, and was not barista standard. Other than that, it was all great, and thank you very much.

We stayed for an extended weekend (Four Nights) in the Feature room. The room was clean and tastefully decorated. The bathroom was luxurious with both a walk in shower and a roll top bath. The staff were friendly and helpful keeping everything just as you wanted it. The restaurant had a wide selection on the menu and it was perfectly prepared and presented. The location is ideal for those wanting a peaceful break. All these facts combined to make the perfect getaway.

A confusing experience - Rating 3/5

We chose the Sea Trout Inn because we\'d read such good things about the food. However, our experience did not live up to the hype and left us thinking they must have some friends in high places when it comes to reviews. The pub lacked charm despite the promise of the exterior. Interior decor was dark, tired and very dated. It reminded me of a pub I worked in in the 1980s both in how it looked and the way it was run. The food was well cooked but not exceptional, especially not compared to the reviews or other \'gastro\' pubs in the area. Our meal was also served at breakneck speed. You hardly had time to put your fork down, when the next course arrived. The sense was that someone wanted everyone out and pronto. Not very welcoming. This would have been a fine (even mildly amusing) had they not started making clear the night was coming to an end... at 9.45pm. Everything was cleared around us, the landlord (we assume) pointedly told us he was off to bed and the barman proceeded to stare us into submission. Please!! It\'s a pub!! On a positive note, the staff were lovely and would probably thrive in a more dynamic environment. I wish i could be more positive. Overall, The Sea Trout could and should be amazing. It has all the right ingredients but sadly it\'s way behind the times. If you stay, it won\'t be bad, but it probably won\'t be great either.

We are a family run pub , myself , my son and his wife Lauren and as the senior Newhouse member I was somewhat surprised and obviously concernedat your comments and observations .Let me firstly say since taking over the Sea Trout in November all our reviews I can assure you are most definitely genuine and independently posted by our guests staying and / or eating with us. We have even just been awarded two Gold awards from Taste of the West for both Pub Dining and Hotel, so I sincerely like to think we are doing something right. We were certainly not chasing you out of the restaurant / bar area, my son Simon closes the pub every night, so when I departed, he most certainly was on duty .We stay open in both pub areas until the last person leaves, never closing before 11 am, most times well after midnight, so when I personally left that evening and said goodnight to you, I was merely being polite and courteous and just made the added comment that I was off up to bed to my flat above the pub.I personally start at 7 am each day, 7 days a week, preparing and serving breakfasts so my son Simon does the late night close, yes there may have been a bar / front of house waitress still on duty serving and assisting Simon, but at 9.45 pm, we were most certainly open as many of our locals pop in to the Stag bar well after 10 pm each night. Your remarks on our décor and appearance etc,I am afraid we cannot change , with respect we are not a modern gastro pub , our heritage at the Sea Trout datesback to the 15th century , with that “Olde World “charm and appearance , but I will convey your comments to the Owners Palmers Brewery next week .The Pub is being redecorated next month externally by Palmers, but the internal appearance and décor internally is what makes The Sea Trout Inn, I think our locals and visiting guests would be horrified if we were to take that image away.Since we took over we have however concentrated and greatly enhanced and improved the ambience and appearance of the restaurant side , our rooms are immaculately kept and all our reviews so far give us a 5 star rating which we do our utmost to maintain and project , more than that unfortunatelywe cannot do.Our food also has greatly improved in quality and choice on the menu since we took over , hence the 5 star ratings we currently have achieved and we are truly sorry it did live up to your expectation. Perhaps we can make your next stay and dining experience better for you and we really do hope you will come and see us again , please be assured we do care about customers comments and do our utmost to make them leave happy or replace any dish that is not their liking or expectation .Kind regards Nigel Newhouse

Definitely better than Fawlty Towers - Rating 4/5

Most friendly staff.Beautifully clean bedroom and en suite, also same in restaurant, full facilities in room.Excellent breakfast too. We had booked lunch for 11 people, service and settings were very good, unfortunately the beef was quite \'tough\' but when mentioned the plate was taken away and a new plate of food brought to table with graceful apology, well handled professionally. The other point I would like to mention is that room 10 suffers from a banging door below, which continued til 11pm (private staff only service door) and actually reverberated the bed! Despite this, we felt it had been good value. Dog friendly too.We would be happy to return.

Thank you for your lovely comments! We will certainly look into the banging door and get it fixed so as not to disturb future guests.

We had a \'Feature Room\' with a firm but comfortable generous sized bed. Good, large, well equipped bathroom. Breakfast was fine and the hosts were very attentive and hospitable. We were attending a party nearby so we didn\'t sample the restaurant but did have some soup which was very good indeed. Our room was directly above the road but this was quiet (Saturday night in November) due to the time of day and year. The bridge over the River Dart into Staverton is extremely narrow (not much more than 6feet) but there is another way, which is worth finding to avoid damage to wing mirrors.

A thoroughly enjoyable 5 nights. Very helpful staff. A seriously good chef. The Sea Trout\' makes much of using locally sourced ingredients, but has a \'blind spot\' over wine. Why no English wine on the wine list? The Sea Trout is within a few miles of Sharpham and the Pebble Bed group of vineyards. They produce excellent wines. Yes English wine is pricey, but visitors will purchase at least one bottle out of curiosity.

Beautiful Stay - Rating 5/5

The Sea Trout Inn is probably the best stay that I have had recently in a hotel. The rooms are very well kept with everything you need. The decor is lovely. It is very peaceful. The beds are very comfortable, offering a peaceful undisturbed night sleep. The only slight negative thing about the rooms is that the TV is slightly too small for the distance from the bed as it is sometimes hard to view and hear, but this is a very minor problem. The tea facilities are much better than other places I have stayed (i.e. you get more than just the 2 sugar sachets so you can have an evening and morning cup of tea!!)The setting is absolutely lovely but if you are not a fan of country lanes, then you will struggle getting here!!The food in the restaurant is brilliant. It is just the right mix of delicious, quality items in just the right quantity (not like nouveaux cuisine where you still feel hungry afterwards!) It is beautiful food, displayed beautifully without being too pretentious. The staff are very pleasant and were happy to accommodate any needs I had.To top it all off, the WIFI is probably the best service I have received from anywhere I have stayed. As I stay on business, it is quite a benefit! I do not have trouble connecting and once connected I received a super fast reliable service to be able to perform any work that I needed to do. HUZZAH!Will definitely look to stay here again on any future visits to the area.

We could not believe our good luck in finding this gem in a part of Devon we have not visited for 30+years. The room was warm, very comfortable and spotlessly clean - we could not have asked for more. The food was beautifully presented and cooked, and any extras we requested were catered for, quickly and willingly - excellent and very friendly customer service from all we met throughout our 3 day stay. We thoroughly recommend this Inn.

My friend and I recently stayed in a twin room at this delightfully friendly Inn. The room had been recently and very tastefully decorated and refurbished. The staff were all extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. Really fabulous that there is still a warm, snug bar attached. Both evenings we enjoyed delicious meals and wine. I couldn\'t really fault this Inn, but there was one, tiny, disappointment..the sliced, rather boring, toast at breakfast. This seemed out of keeping with the otherwise excellent food. Easily remedied I am sure with some proper bread.

Brilliant Short Break - Rating 5/5

We stayed at The Sea Trout from Friday to Sunday at the busiest time of the year, August Bank Holiday. Given this, the staff were exceptionally good;cheerful, obliging and ready to chat. The hotel is a lovely 15th Century inn that retains its charm in the bars &dining rooms but has been excellently modernised in the bedrooms.Unlike a lot of country pubs, The Sea Trout has retained a separate public bar that is popular with the villagers and has a lovely local feel. Our room was a good size with tasteful decoration, modern furnishings and a very well appointed bathroom. We ate in the hotel twice and the food was very good.A nicely balanced menu providing a blend of pub classics with more up-market dishes featuring fresh local fish.Jason &Sam made us feel very welcome and I would have no hesitation in staying at The Sea Trout again.

We returned to Staverton after a 12 year break to find the Sea Trout Inn as friendly and as comfortable as before. The rooms are generous in size, spotlessly clean and the beds are very comfortable. Our room like all others looked out over the rear garden where we did enjoy excellent meals that are on offer. The setting itself is in a tiny hamlet which ensures a quiet nights sleep and equally rewarding walks. We strolled down to the most picturesque river and walked adjacent to the railway line. When we got to the road we were rewarded by seeing a steam train at the station. It's run by enthusiasts and covers three stations, servicing locals and tourists alike.

Lovely place - Rating 5/5

We stayed here in March and had a great deal with 3 nights dinner bed and breakfast. Room was nice, everything you needed with a lovely view over the church and countryside. Bar and restaurant is lovely, friendly owners and very knowledgable staff. A very well run business. The food was excellent, I can't fault it. Two course dinner included in the price and I have to say it was stunningly good. We mostly ate fish and the white wine creamy garlic sauce was the best, absolutely delicious. We returned here after staying a night 3 years ago. Can't recommend enough, will definately be coming back, thanks all!

We stayed for 3 nights with 2 other couples. Our nicely decorated room had a lovely view &plenty of storage &hangers. Our earplugs came in handy one "long"night to muffle the noise from the next door room. The inn also has plenty of parking. The menu is very good &we enjoyed all our meals. Would definitely recommend a stay.

6.5/10 - Rating 3/5

The accommodation was first class the restaurant menu for vegetarians was limited so my wife chose the seafood risotto which turned out like rice pudding (obviously overcooked,(I was under the impression chefs were supposed to sample food) the sweets were overpriced meager in quantity for thier cost and showed no imagination, the service was slow the waitresses inattentive and butting in on conversations.the breakfast was well up to expectation served by the owner/ manager .The overall impression was slightly disappointing and I hope things improve

Dear Mr & Mrs CreesWe are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us.As you can see from pervious reviews this is not the usual standard and we have indeed won awards for our food.I have spoken to the waitress on duty that evening and she was a little surprised to hear that you did not enjoy your food as when she checked with you she was advised that everything was lovely and all the plates were empty when she came to clear the table. However, that said I am sad that your wife did not enjoy her risotto as much as she should have.It is a popular dish that people come back for time and time again, and I will speak to the chef working that night to make sure this does not happen again.Kind regardsSamantha Price

A friendly inn with good food - Rating 4/5

The staff at the Sea Trout could not have been more helpful or friendly. We were shown to our room and everything was explained. Our dog was welcomed, not just tolerated, and we were given advice about local walks. Our room was modest in size but very clean and comfortable. A couple of minor faults, which the staff were aware of and were in the course of remedying, lose a star but did not detract from our enjoyment. Dinner, with an emphasis on fish, and breakfast were both excellent and beautifully presented. Staverton is an attractive village and the walk to and along the river to the station is delightful. We will be returning.

I'll keep it brief, but I am happy to say that this was one of the most pleasurable stays in any hotel I have ever stayed at. The staff were fantastic, accommodating my very early morning arrival, this helpfulness continued throughout my stay. The rooms were of the highest standard, on par with ay 5 star hotel in any city location, but with the joys of a warm cozy country inn environment downstairs, a mix I found to be excellent! The food was exceptionally good, with my complimentary breakfast being one of the best I have ever tasted, and I am someone who finds myself in hotels all over the world! Thank you to all the staff and I look forward to seeing you on a long weekend retreat during the summer, rather than a business trip.

Splendid Stay at The Sea Trout - Rating 5/5

We looked for somewhere near Totnes to stay for a night with our small dog. We were very lucky to choose the Sea Trout Inn. The accommodation was excellent, large towels in the en suite, a large and comfortable double bed and even a welcome mat for the dog. We took DB&B and at both meals the food was excellent, fresh, well cooked and well presented by friendly staff. As you might expect from the name the fish was particularly good. Try the fresh locally sourced lightly smoked haddock (not shop bought bright yellow type) and poached egg for breakfast to set you up for the day. On arrival we were warmly greeted and shown to our room. Yup, first impressions certainly do count. One problem:the TV worked well in the evening but in my bleary eyed attempts to get another channel the next day I pressed the wrong button and managed to lose the signal! However, if you are looking for a delightful, clean, welcoming stay try the Sea Trout and take dinner as well. Bring your well mannered dog too. Highly recommended and we hope to return 'ere long.

Great stay - Rating 5/5

We stayed for Saturday and Sunday nights with another couple, and were in the magnificent signature room with its lovely décor and marvellous bathroom. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the meals, and the breakfasts were delicious. Everything was spotlessly clean and the welcome was extremely friendly. Sam and Jason, who can't have had much time to spare, could not have been more helpful or pleasant. One day we shall definitely return.

Everything an Inn should be - Rating 5/5

We spent three nights at the Sea Trout Inn in May 2013. After a long and frustrating drive from London, the very friendly greeting we had when checking in helped dispel the gloom. Our spirits were raised even more by the comfortable and well-appointed room and the food in the restaurant. The quality and imaginative cuisine far exceeded expectations. The Inn clearly has a well-established local following, as could be seen by the number of people dining there every night. Breakfasts were freshly prepared and plentiful. Service was excellent, and even Lily, the landlords' dog joined in. The Sea Trout Inn is everything a country inn should be.

Superb service and food! - Rating 5/5

When we arrived Ann was there to check usin and was delightful. Nothing was too much trouble and this is how it went on for the 3 nights we stayed at The Sea Trout. Sam and Jason have obviously worked hard to get the inn to a great standard and it shows. The service is wonderful, friendly and very personal. We stayed on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis for 3 nights and the food was superb. Our room ( 2 ) was clean and bright and lots of storage and hangers in the wardrobe, fantastic shower and lovely view overlooking the garden, church and countryside. We travel a lot in the U.K. and this is right up there with the best. Only 10 days before we were in Dubai at a five star hotel on the Palm and I know I would rather be at The Sea Trout! My husband travels the world on business and spends 50 o/o of his year in very good hotels and he loved the Trout. Great food and service and friendliness. Thank you, we will certainly stay again as we are house hunting in the area, then it can be our local!

This was our third stay at The Sea Trout but the first under the current ownership and it is even better. The bedrooms have been beautifully refurbished and the public rooms are spotlessly clean and well maintained. The food is first class with plenty of choice for all courses. The prices are very reasonable, and with it's excellent location midway between the moors and the coast there is no reason to go anywhere else in South Devon.

Having spent a very happy christmas at The Sea Trout we promised to return for a short break in the spring, and did so last week to to celebrate a special birthday. The welcome was just as warm, the room just as comfortable, and the food just as tasty;the only difference this time was that the weather was good too, and we were able to get out and about during our stay! Just what I needed! - Rating 5/5

The Sea Trout Inn was just spot on! I was looking to go on a break for a couple of days and discovered this pub to be very comfortable and offered everything I needed. My room was very clean, modern and well furbished, the double bed was comfortable and the view over the back towards the church was a great bonus. I paid £80 per night for DB&B which was very good value. The pub served excellent quality food and the service was attentative and generally faultless! The pub itself has a very welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, serves a range of great beers and had a roaring fire going everytime I went downstairs to relax! My only complaints would be the frustratingly cheap TV in the room which was hard work to use and the wifi signal being fairly poor upstairs too (I could just get a slow and weak connection on my laptop but nothing on my iPhone).Otherwise I can't see how anyone could walk away disappointed if they stayed here.

I had a great stay at The Sea Trout Inn. Lovely food and my room was first class and very comfortable. I was there as a business traveller with clients in the area, but I was really looking forward to my visit because it was always a great fishing hotel in days gone by - but about 10 years ago had a reputation for being a bit run down. I can safely and enthusiastically report that Jason, Sam and the current team at the healm have made it once again a great venue for fishermen, or indeed anyone else.I will be doing a review at a later date for my site from a fisherman's point of view - subject of course to their approval.Truly excellent will surfice for now.

A lovely way to spend Christmas - Rating 5/5

Looking to do something different for Christmas this year, we came across The Sea Trout Inn via the Dog Friendly website. The Inn’s own excellent website, the positive comments from previous guests, and our telephone conversation at the time of booking a two-night Christmas package, all promised an enjoyable stay - we certainly weren’t disappointed! From the moment we arrived we were made most welcome, our room was spacious, comfortable, and beautifully presented, the food (including a splendid 5-course Christmas Day lunch) was excellent, and the proprietors, Jason and Sam, together with their friendly staff, looked after us (and our dog Scamper) so well throughout our stay - nothing was too much trouble. The only downside was that our visit coincided with a persistent spell of very wet weather! Hardly the fault of The Sea Trout Inn though and at least the rain eased up enough on Christmas morning for us to enjoy a splash around the village of Staverton and to walk along the River Dart, later followed by a ride through the nearby Dartington Estate. Both outings, however brief, did at least give us a taste of what the surrounding area has to offer, and simply endorsed our determination to return, as soon as possible, to sample The Sea Trout Inn’s hospitality once again!

When asked "What would you like to do for your 60th birthday?, how about the Maldives or Mauritius?"The reply was I would like to go to the Seatrout with Bracken (who is a friends dog we borrow for the weekend). We really enjoy the friendly atmosphere at the Seatrout. Bracken makes himself at home by the fire and enjoys the dogie treats and all the fuss and attention. The bedrooms are very comfortable and spotlessly clean and well equipped. The food is delicious and reasonably priced and the staff are very professional and efficient, but also friendly and welcoming. All in all a lovely birthday experience and looking forward to seeing you all again in 2013. Who needs the Maldives when you've got the Seatrout!Happy Christmas to you all. Don't work too hard.Best wishes,Haydn and Sue

Thank you for your review. We are truly flattered that Mr Hayden Jones chose the Sea Trout and our team to celebrate his birthday over an exoctic get away. It is always lovley to see familiar faces returning time and again and we are pleased that you enjoy your stay. Great stay AGAIN ! - Rating 5/5

This is the third time my partner and I have stayed at the sea trout. We first stayed 2 years ago when my partner was working in Devon so I tagged along and stayed,I loved it so wanted to come back for my birthday whenwasn't alone all day. Still great 2 years later, we have stayed in three different rooms including feature room all are excellent, my parents were also staying there and they had lovely room too. The restaurant is very high standard for a pub, we ate there both nights. The area is peaceful and like going back in time, we didn't use our car just walked down to the lovely steam train station to go to totnes for the day, the dart river walk is lovely. If you want a peaceful time away with good accommodation in a lovely area with good food you will not go wrong by staying here! One final point I notice some reviews said rooms on the road side were noisy RUBBISH we had the road side this time and I didnt hear anything and the view is just as prettyas the garden view.

I have been staying at the Sea Trout Inn for many years, in fact the last two owners.I have never felt let down by either the food or service. I have to say that Justin and Samantha are probably the best.I do not eat any meat but was well catered for and tried something different every evening.Nothing was too much trouble and my dog was made very welcome indeed, in fact it was a pleasant change to be able to take him down for breakfast in the mornings, along with other dog owners, it felt more like a club. Our room and bathroom were spotless.I shall be returning asap.Well Done.Helen Neal

Very good first experience - Rating 4/5

It was my first experience staying in the Sea Trout Inn over a weekend in early August 2012. The hotel staff was very friendly, even carried my luggage to my room - I didn't expect that for a country-inn type of hotel. I had English breakfast (other choices were available);it was quick and good. The most I like is that the hotel is very clean. The room I had was big. The location is very quiet (no traffic or other disturbance whatsoever). The only down side is I couldn't get wi-fi signal in my room;even in the lobby the connection was very slow. I guess it won't cost much for the owner to upgrade the wi-fi. Overall, a very good experience of staying in this hotel.

Five days in Devon - Rating 5/5

The Sea Trout Inn in Staverton met all our expections . We received a friendly welcome from the staff in the bar from the moment of our arrival andthat welcome continued throughout our stay. The friendliness of the staff seemed to extend to all areas and made us feel very much at home. The room was a reasonable size and the bed was very comfortable.Food was to a high standard and above typical "pub"grub standard. We ate there every evening always trying something different from the extensive menu. The only problem we had was in learning to cope with some of the typical Devon lanesbut after a few days we became quite expert. One word of advice be cautious in the use of "Sat Nav"!

Our party of 5 came to Devon for a weekend jamboree at a nearby country estate and found that the Sea Trout provided the perfect accommodation. It is a beautiful olde-English style pub, located in an idyllic village. We were made very welcome upon arrival, our rooms were clean, modern and well-appointed and the bar was much needed after a 5-hour drive. The full English breakfast was to die for while Sunday lunch provided a well-cooked, imaginative and substantial meal to prepare us for the journey home.Well Done, the entire team who turned our short weekend break into a particularly enjoyable mini-holiday.

A Secluded Gem ! - Rating 5/5

Found the Sea Trout Inn through a web search for hotel near Newton Abbot and thought I would give it a try as a change from the usual bog standard (if reliable) major hotel chains. What gem. The hotel is not too far of the beaten track but far enough to be nice and quiet and secluded. The room was to an excellent standard, very light, well equiped and up to date including free wifi. My room overlooked the attractive and secluded garden at the back of the building and as the weather was sunny it was a lovely place to have a quiet beer. The evening menu was good with choices of A la Carte or bar food but all that I saw looked equally of a good standard. I chose the restaurant and the food and drink were excellent.Breakfast was in the conservatory. The choice was extensive and the quality was again excellent with all food cooked to order and I would have to say perfectly cooked. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout. All in all a good decision and I look forward to staying again when I am next in the area.

Great Short Break - Rating 5/5

I previously stayed at The Sea Trout Inn with work colleagues;having had a great time then I elected to take my wife for a night's stay. All was as before:warm welcome;good beer;fabulous food and well appointed room. My only minor negative would be that the wall to the neighbouring room was not a particularly effective acoustic barrier, but the overall experience was definitely worthy of 5 stars.

Couldn't fault it - Rating 5/5

We stayed one night on our way down to Cornwall and the Sea Trout Inn exceeded our expectations. The inn is well looked after, the bed was very comfortable and our room and ensuite shower were spotless. The staff were friendly and we were made to feel welcome. We ate in the pub in the evening and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The restaurant area had a nice relaxed atmosphere and the food was excellent. Our night at the Sea Trout Inn was very good value for money and we would definitely stay again.

The Sea Trout is exactly the type of place that we enjoy...a traditional pub with great food and comfortable accommodation. Every member of staff that we spoke to was very friendly and this added to the really nice atmosphere about the place.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Sea trout. The walks around the area were great with the added attraction of the steam trainrunning into Totnes and up to Dartmoor. The food, room, real ale and staff were great. We plan to go back with friends later in the summer.

A Winning combination - Rating 5/5

Sea Trout has an excellent combination of excellent hosts, well decorated, clean and comfortable rooms, good beer and food, great location, and the odd bit of entertainment thrown in. We stayed for three nights while house hunting in the rococo room with freestanding bath. You are made to feel completely at home and nothing is too much trouble. Excellent accomodation and dog friendly too.We would definately recommend that you stay here. Looking forward to returnng hopefully as a 'local' soon.

Lovely Stay - Rating 4/5

The Sea Trout Inn, is an amazing place to stay. It is very welcoming and comfortable as soon as you walk through the door, the owners are extremly helpful and polite. The twin room was a comfortable and cosy room to be in, a very nice size. With a great sized bathroom and the room was very well maintained and clean. I will definitely be staying at the Sea Trout Inn again on my next monthly visit to Cornwall.

WARM & FREINDLY - Rating 4/5

We had a very enjoyable stay and wished that it could have been longer. The enjoyment was partly due to the location of Staverton and also the Inn itself. We are always assured of a warm welcome and good food and this visit was no exception. The bedroom accommodation was comfortable, warm and quiet, and we look forward to the next visit whenever that may be.Nick Rex
